Deep background - link to POSL

 Higher (deep) background (POSL):

  • FTL impossible
  • Habitable worlds non-existent
  • Long-term artificial colonies unviable because engineering always fails
  • The galaxy has a light dusting of wrecks and failed colonies NOT littered with active alien species.
How this relates to Seneca (loose enough that Seneca is stand alone and not a sequel):
In Interchange the Sunstorm is not launched, but Jude Harrison ends in a position to rebuild Mars, with all of Sunstorm's supplies. Hal Harrison is broadcast to meet the unknown aliens (the Orna) at Procyon.

No signal is ever received back.

At some future date the Sunstorm is launched by Mars and her colonists, now thriving. It is half empty, the venture smaller, but more targetted. A mission to the earth type planet in the habitable zone of Procyon - hunting for Hal as much as anything else.

Jude, after long years resisting colonisation because of Hal's warning, is overruled? Or does Jude no longer exist? Jude does not trust Hal - he may/may not have been telling the truth. They must test his claims that the galaxy is essentially inaccessible to corporeal humans?
